Cultivating a good habit to save up to buy toys

Star Wars Clone Commander Cody action figure.

While on my weekly toy shopping trip in Orchard Road yesterday, I came  across a father and his son queuing to pay for their their toy purchases at the cashier.  The son who looked about 10 years old, wanted to buy a pair of Star Wars action figures that were on offer at 2 for SGD 25.00.

The unusual part of it was that when it was their turn to pay, the boy brought out a Ziglog bag containing a SGD 10.00 note, some SGD 2.00 notes, and the rest were a bagful of SGD 1.00 coins, and other coins!  He handed the ziglog bag to the cashier who then picked out the correct amount from the bag and then returned the remainder and the bag to the boy.

Wow, I wonder how long it took the boy to save up that Ziplog bagful of cash and coins!  I think he was buying a couple of action figures from The Clone Wars series, which I presume is more popular with kids, since it is 3-D animated.  The father sure did a great job in instilling the virtue of saving in his son.  In this way, I believe the boy will appreciate and treasure his toys more, since he bought them with his own money!

I throw whatever coins I have at then end of the day into my piggie banks too. Hopefully when they are full, it’ll be enough to buy me something.

I will introduce this to my kids. Making them save up and buy their own toys. I’ll subsides a bit then. Ha! Ha!

BTW, nice meeting up last Sunday!

    Hi Kenny,

I use a ‘piggy bank’ system too! But when I see my coins ‘grow’ so much, I become reluctant to use them :P

    hi Katsuden,

Great to meet you too on Sunday! :D

It’s still ok to buy toys for kids on special occasions like their birthdays, Christmas, and as rewards when they get good exam results..
