Disney buys Marvel

This is the “breaking news” financial and business of the week and quite an impactful one for the toy, games, comic and movie industries.

This is a Marvel fan’s thoughts about this major merger and aquisition (M&A) deal.

For me, I’m not so surprised by the acquistion of Marvel by Disney. I sort of half expected it when Disney secured the rights to release the DVD volumes of the 90’s X-Men cartoon series that I bought earlier this year.

I think most of Marvel’s creations would still be left intact, and that the Disney characters would not be put into the same combined ‘universe’ with the Marvel ones.  If the Marvel fans get ‘offended’ and boycott both Marvel and Disney, that would be detrimental for their business.

On the bright side, Disney is very good at marketing and distribution, which are vital for a comics company to expand its influence, especially with keen competition from other modern entertainment like online gaming.

I just wonder if Hasbro will still continue to make the Marvel toys.  Many Disney toys are made by Mattel.  Only time will tell what future lies ahead for these 2 leading companies of their respective industries.  We can only wait and see.  In the meantime, our own lives lives must still go on!
