Do you ever notice that…

Marvel Universe Captain America action figure.

…when 2 or more collectors find out that they all own a certain toy (which is usually the highly sought after kind), they will inevitably and very predictably ask one another how much they paid for it?

People just love to compare, even when it comes to toy collecting!  It feels like a kind of hierarchy being established.  If Collector A owns a rare toy that Collector B doesn’t have, then A ‘ranks’ higher than B in that collection.  If both have that toy, then the one who paid lesser for it ‘wins’, LOL!

Similarly if you praise a prized toy belonging to a collector, he or she will tend to reveal how much they paid for it, without you asking the question.  A feel good feeling they had perhaps?

I have nothing against the above.  They are just observations I made not only in the toy collecting hobby, but in other similar aspects of life as well.  Just like when you compliment someone that her clothes or bag are very nice and suit her, her response is likely to tell you on her own how much she paid for them!

Sometimes when people ask me how much I paid for a certain toy, I wonder how should I reply?  Retail price or clearance sale price?  It may make you feel a bit down if you ‘lost’ in the ‘price game’, LOL!

So did you encounter such toy observations before?  Feel free to share your comments here!

Ya sometime but I learn no point crying over it as at that point of time, you have the mean to get the toy you like. :)

    Hi mangyver5223,

I still have 1 piece in my toy lockers 28E & 28F at Toy Outpost (#07, Plaza Singapura). You can go there to view it and buy directly from there.

    hiya Julia,
it’s a nice thing that you discussed about this, cause it always happened to me when we gathered with other fellow collector, they make the price observation, and I just DON’T know what the point of this question…until know

I mean, I just couldn’t understand the motive

never thought about the “price game” either, especially cause I really valued any rare item that I obtained with a cheap price,
this really satisfied me, it meant a lot to me that my “hunting game” are a big success by obtaining rare items for a steal price

well, maybe because me and my girl (she also a collector) never ask this observational question before to any of our friend, and to be frank, we kinda bothered with this type of questions…

do you have any opinion about this?

    Hi nuo2×2 - Seiichi,

Thank you for reading my blog! :)

When other collectors know I have the same toy as they do, they will usually ask me the price question first. I tend not to ask the question first cos I prefer not to know the answer! :P

But to think it through for our entire toy collections, we pay more than retail prices for some and pay less retail prices for others. In a way, the $$ spend should sort of even out on the long run. This can make us feel better :D

hahahahahaw, yeah… I guessed you’re right!! totaly agreed with your “even out” toys budget sis ^^

um, how do you finally answer those question if they ask you about those price? if you ask me, I prefer just not to answer them ;)
