‘Protect’ your collectible toys from kids and pets

Upon collecting toys, you will realise that you need to consider and take care of storage space and display area, inventory and cost records, budget and funds management, and minimize overspending etc.

You also need to keep your precious collectible toys safe from children, especially those of your visitors, to prevent possible damage by them.  It is ironic that toys were originally made to be played with by children but once they become your collectibles, you know they are never to be placed in the hands of children without your permission and supervision.

Always lock your toys in your display cabinets, cupboards or toy rooms as you may not be at home to ‘protect’ them when the kids come visiting.  Some kids can be so ill-mannered that they do not ask for permission and will open unlocked cabinets or enter ‘forbidden’ rooms and end up ‘destroying’ your toys.  Their parents will think that their kids are so cute when playing with your collectible toys or that their kids are so ’smart’ to find toys to play with in your house.

These parents are usually non-toy collectors who cannot comprehend your anguish and your almost uncontrollable urge to snatch your toys back asap before they get permanently damaged.  You will become torn between saving your toys, and not creating a scene that might make the kids end up crying and you looking petty.  At this moment, only another toy collector can empathize with you.  Hence prevention is better than cure and do not get yourself into this predicament.

If you have small children of your own or have little kids staying with you and your toys, then teach them to respect your collection and not to handle them without your permission.  You can even share your love for toy collecting with them by telling them the history behind those toys, especially if the toys are based on some cartoons, comics, etc.  If you find that your children love your toys very much like you do, why not buy them own pieces or sets if you can afford it?  Even vintage toys of the 80s like G1 My Little Pony toys can be easily and cheaply acquired online.  The kids will usually play with their own collection and leave yours alone.

If you keep house pets like dogs and cats at home, you must take precautions at ALL times too.  These animals may chew on your toys, knock them over or pull them down.  Some pets never touch their owners’ toys but it is better to be on safe side.  Get your pets their own pet toys to play with and keep them out of your toy rooms as much as possible.
