ROTF Deluxe “Ice Cream Truck” Skids & Mudflap review

If you are quite active in the collecting of Transformers Revenge of the Fallen (ROTF) movie toys recently, you would be aware of this ‘mad rush’ to secure the “rare and hard to find” ROTF Deluxe “Ice Cream Truck” Skids & Mudflap action figures.  They are part of the latest wave of ROTF Deluxe toys to hit our local departmental stores.  This wave was first sighted here around 2 weeks ago.  Since then, the Ice Cream Truck (as it has been nicknamed in the forums by collectors), has been consistently “out of stock” at many places.

So why is this particular set of Skids and Mudflap so overwhelmingly popular with collectors here?  To recap, this vehicle and robot modes only appeared briefly in the ROFT movie.  The vehicle design also doesn’t seem to fit in with the more ‘modern-looking’ vehicles the other Transformers characters took on in the movie.  Is this Ice Cream Truck modelled after typical older truck models that can still be found in Shanghai, where the movie scene took place?  Then the words on the truck should be in printed in Chinese instead right?

The toy colors on the whole just reminds me of a little girl’s toy, because of the bright pink, that comes across as “Barbie Doll pink”.  Why is this set of twins so highly desirable?  Could it be that you get 2 Scout size robot figures that combine to become a Deluxe size vehicle, which makes it unique?  Or is it the short term shortage that causes ‘panic’ amongst collectors (who would usually take their time to buy it) to rush to get it now in case there is ‘no more’ stocks left for them at retail price ‘forever’?  Frankly, I just don’t see the appeal of this Ice Cream Truck.  I can only conclude that the most common reason to acquire it is to complete your ROTF movie cast.

How about you?  Do you own this Ice Cream Truck?  Or do you plan or not plan to get it?  What are your reasons and comments about it?  Feel free to share them here!

    Hi Juliana,

I was not able to get one from the first batch, but i reserved one from the second shipment which will be coming soon, according to sms sent by store staff yesterday. :)

I’ve been wanting to have the action figure version since i watched ROTF. I was really amused by the twins. :)

I hope they make a Legends/EZ version, i would like that better. :)

I didn’t make preorder on the ice cream truck. But I have confident I will get the Takara Version once the stock arrived.

    Hi Bany,

If they have Legends Ice Cream Truck, then the individual twins in robot modes must be really tiny! If not the Truck has to be a little larger than the usual the Legends vehicles :P I also look forward to a Legends version if they ever make it :D

    Hi deSMOnd,

You can also consider the Hasbro version if you come across it. It’s still cheaper than the Takara one right? :)

Yes, I saw few pieces left in Carrefour. But there are shops at CSC selling it at S$35. Ridiculous!! This is Hasbro version, so what if these are in higher demand?!

    Found this at the supermarket:

I guess they just opened a Deluxe Class box since I saw a Jolt, Skids, several Bumblebees, and this icecream truck.

I actually had second thoughts about getting it since I’ve already placed an order in the toy store I frequent, but since that hasn’t arrived yet, and it’s unclear if there will be enough stocks, I decided to get the one above. :)

    Hi deSMOnd,

I have no idea why they are going for that price. Testing the market perhaps? :P

Buddy of mine has been clamoring for the Ice Cream truck. Personally, I think the concept’s really cool. But I’m just not a fan of the aesthetics, personally.

Also, congrats to those who’ve managed to get this haul. My buddy would be preeeetty darn jealous of y’all.

    Hi

I think the main appeal of the ice cream trucks is in the “2 robots combine into 1″. That’s why even i (who cant be considered a diehard collecter since even optimus is not in my collection) went to get a piece. And the store i got it from knows that this is a best seller and made me buy all the other deluxe toys (aka the peg warmers) within the same wave as part of the deal! Argh!

  11. Juliana Heng on August 18th, 2009

    Hi Alvin,

The main peg warmer is Blazemaster. Dead End is still ok. The stores have their difficulties too. Alternatively is to wait till the departmental stores re-stock. But that will take “who knows how long”…

    Hi again Juliana,

Finally opened my icecream truck. I can’t seem to close the hood after transforming to robot form and back to truck mode (Skids’ head keeps popping up). And i also noticed the Autobot sticker is missing on Skids’ chest. :(

  13. Bany on August 20th, 2009

I checked the ice cream truck pics over the Net, there’s really no sticker on Skids’s chest, unlike the pic on the toy’s card. Now, I only have to figure out how to close the hood properly. :)

i bought mine from the rapid culture’s booth at stgcc. (: to close the hood properly you have to put back it’s hands first to hold up the side windows which is connected to the hood and will press it down. i hope it helps. ><

    Hi Bany,

Cool, Germaine replied to you. Hope it works for you :D

    Thanks Germaine!

So you like your Ice Cream truck? :)

  16. Juliana Heng on August 21st, 2009

    Hi updatedude,

Let your buddy know that it’s ok to wait for restocks for they will evenually come. No need to be anxious about not buying it during the early waves :)

  17. Germaine on August 21st, 2009

haha yup. but it would be nice if it were ‘bit bigger and more detailed. haha.

  18. Juliana Heng on August 22nd, 2009

    H Germaine,

Haha, maybe one day there might be a Human Alliance (HA) version of the Ice Cream truck that comes with an ice cream seller cum driver ! :)

  19. Bany on August 24th, 2009

Thanks Juliana and Germaine, i’ll try that later. I hope the ice cream truck comes out in Legends Class and RPMs (with movie accurate markings, hehe). :)

    Hi Bany,

You’re welcome!. Your TF toy addiction never ends… :P

    Hello Juliana,

    good day!
i was browsing for a review of the Ice Cream truck Twins, and i came across your site. I’d like to share my opinions about this twin set since i have this also.

Reasons why this is a sought after figure:
    1) Skids and Mudflap are funny Characters in the movie. SO, it is also appropriate that they have a funnier and weird alternte mode. What better vehicle to represent a child’s happiness than ICE CREAM. Most kids i know can relate to ice cream!

    2) The Vehicle mode on this is a fresh take from the usuall alt modes which are sleek and modern, or regular stock vehicles. (as you mentioned above). This is a sure shelf figure, best in alt mode since this stands out from the rest; the usuall reds, blues, blacks, and purple/violet colored TFs.

    3) This is one figure almost my female friends find so cute. If they cant relate to my leader class prime, they sure notice this twins as “loook…its the ice cream truck! so cute!”
it is a piece where i can relate my figures to the opposite sex.

    4) As aa toy customizer, the ice cream truck twins alt mode can have many modifications. One mod can be replacing the spiral soft-sundae cone light to a working LED light.
come check out http://www.frenzyrumble.com for his custom work on this figure.

    5) i have this figure on my PC or my work desk. it’s such a fun figure to have because it’s not just a 3 in 1; two robot modes, and an alt mode
So you get your money’s worth for paying an regular deluxe class figure.

ANwyay, thanks for the opportunity to share.

    Ryan
