Stage 3/5 of collecting toys: The Nirvana stage
In the My Little Pony collecting community which I am a part of, we call the ultra rare and extremely hard to find/get ponies ‘Nirvanas’, simply because they are so ‘up there’, like almost ‘out of reach’. This is the highest and the most ultimate level of your toy collection.
Nirvanas can be toys that are mail orders/limited editions/toy fair exclusives/anniversary items/made in certain countries other than the usual countries of toy production like Hong Kong or China (for toys made in the 80’s). They are not sold with the regular toys at the usual retail stores. If you are not in the toy collecting community or industry, you will usually have no idea of their existence or where to find them.
Nirvana toys are like the treasures of your treasures. If you do rank your toys, then the Nirvanas are like the kings and queens of your collection. Some toy collectors call them the ‘Holy Grails’. These are not necessarily the most expensive or rarest toys you own, although they usually are. The Nirvana toy can be a mail order toy that is worth USD 800/- today but you bought it for just under USD 200/- 6 years ago. It has become a valuable investment because its market value appreciated over the years, that is provided if you store it in pristine condition all this while.
Usually each collectible toyline will have their own Nirvana toys and once you are a toy collector of that toyline, you will surely learn about them, especially from the ongoing discussions on the forums, the toy magazines that you read or the toy news websites that you frequent. Being highly sought after and usually in tight supply, Nirvana toys tend to be priced at a premium, so do your research well and be aware of the fair market prices that you should acquire them for.
