What do you enjoy most about toy collecting?

You love the appearance of the toy or the character it represents

Many toys are made after characters from comic books, cartoons, movies, TV shows etc.  They can also be based on animals (from the past, present and imagined) and everyday items (like cars).

The toys are 3-D representations of things that are originally in 2-D forms, or things whose real versions are unattainable for most people, so they get the replicas.  Sometimes the sculpting of the toys are so top notch that is becomes like collecting ‘art pieces’.

The thrill of the hunt

The harder to obtain and more highly sought-after the toys, the more exciting it is to ‘hunt them down’ and make them yours!  Looks like we like to spend our lives chasing after things.  If we don’t then we are better off being the hermits who detach themselves from the mundane world, haha…!

The targeted toy that is not yet ours, is the toy closest to our hearts till we get it.  After we acquire a toy, we feel happy with it for a while, then store them aside to chase after the next toy.  Haha, how typical of us but we just love this hobby anyway!

The bragging rights

You are among the first or few collectors to own “Nirvana” toys.  Yeah as humans, we all reserve this right to be proud of our achievements, and that includes being ‘privileged’ owners of certain rare toys that wins us the admiration or makes us the envy of other fellow collectors.

In life, we all like to have this ‘feel good’ emotion that makes us feel important.  Face it, we are all ‘guilty’ of this ‘need to feel recognized by others sometime in our lives!  You must be deceiving yourself if you say you never ever had such feelings, heehee…!

The pride of amassing a ‘treasure’ collection

This is very related to “bragging rights”.  People by nature like to collect things, whether it is toys, or money, property, cars, etc.  It makes them feel happy and gives a sense of accomplishment.  This is especially if you own rare or highly sought-after exclusive toys that tend to appreciate in value over the years.  Sometimes these collections start off as investments but gradually it becomes an obsession to keep expanding the collection, even though you already have a lot of the ’same things’.

You honestly don’t know why, you just enjoy the hobby

This is self-explanatory.  Probably it’s an inborn liking for collecting toys.  You are just fated to collect toys in this lifetime!

Can you think of anymore points? :)

I enjoy most is displaying toys with my favourite poses on the shelves and also feel great satisfaction when I own some toys that are rare and unique till today, and those toys are not neccessary got value in the future. Another enjoyment is to make friends with other collectors to share opinion with each others. I definitely won’t sell my collection if I want to buy it in the 1st place. Only sell when I really have zero interest on them anymore. I am pretty sure I will keep most of my collection.

    Hi Shaun,

Oh yes I missed out the photography part. This enjoyment and sharing of toy photos would not be so viable if not for the internet! I really appreciate having internet access :D

    Hi deSMOnd,

Yeah I agree that I do enjoy admiring my toy collections. Most of my online friends are toy collectors. That’s one big reason why I go online everyday - to check out what’s new and what’s for sale in the toy forums :D
